Flatiron
The Flatiron District was coined as a neighborhood in the mid-1980s, however its iconic triangular Flatiron Building, built circa 1909, has been a mainstay there for far longer, and remains a well-recognized landmark and architectural gem. What was once the tallest building in the world at 22 stories, if only for a short time, was later joined by beautiful structures of all styles such as Beaux-Arts, Neo-Renaissance, Romanesque Revival apartment and loft buildings, and modern high-rises. While Flatiron was known mainly for toy manufacturing and photography in its day, it blossomed into a coveted destination for shopping, dining and entertainment. Michelin-star restaurants abound like The Clocktower, Gramercy Tavern, Aldea and others; plus the area is home to the original Eataly, and close to Union Square farmer’s market for food lovers of all kinds. A focal point is Madison Square Park, an urban oasis with seasonal art installations, lush green space, and the first-ever Shake Shack.
